What Is Akide Candy?

The origins of Akide candy date back to the 16th century. It is a type of confection that belongs to Turkish and Ottoman cuisine. The word “Akide” comes from the Arabic word “Aqid”, meaning contract or agreement.

Akide Candy in the Ottoman Empire

In the Ottoman Empire, food was served to the Janissary soldiers during the ulufe (salary) ceremonies. If the soldiers were satisfied with their payment, they would distribute Akide candy. In this way, these colorful candies symbolized a form of agreement, expressing the soldiers’ satisfaction and loyalty to the Sultan.
Akide candy was also distributed during the Sword Girding Ceremony, which was a symbol of sovereignty in the Ottoman Empire.

Akide Candy Today

Today, Akide candy continues to be distributed in Anatolia and Istanbul, especially on occasions that highlight traditional values, such as Mevlid ceremonies, during the month of Ramadan, and on holy nights (Kandil). It remains an important part of Turkish culinary culture.
